NOVA VAROŠ – center of Zlatar

Whether they are tourist, cultural, gastronomic, sports, musical, urban, or rural events, festivals are undoubtedly occasions that celebrate life and are a favorite reason for gathering among the residents of the Nova Varoš region and their guests.

Zlatarfest

Zlatarfest is undoubtedly the largest event at the foothills of Zlatar Mountain. Held at the end of July, it presents the economic and tourism potential of the municipality of Nova Varoš through an entertaining and musical program for visitors. This festival is a unique mosaic made up of numerous smaller events.

Cheese Festival (Sirijada)

Sirijada is an exhibition and competition for the title of the best Zlatar cheese. At the same time, there is also a companion competition for making the best buckwheat pie (heljdopita), which would not be so special without its essential ingredients – Zlatar cheese and Zlatar buckwheat from the surrounding slopes.

Traditional Izvik Singing Competition

The Traditional Izvik Singing Competition, characteristic of the narrower region of Stari Vlah, is most widespread in the Nova Varoš area. This style of musical expression is one of the oldest forms of two-part singing among the Serbian people. “Izvik singing” is included in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Golden Hands of Zlatar

Golden Hands of Zlatar is an exhibition and sales event held throughout the duration of Zlatarfest. It showcases a unique selection of handmade food products, textiles, items made from various materials, souvenirs, and similar goods. A special attraction is the exhibition of honey and bee product producers from the Zlatar region.

Zlatar Regatta

The Zlatar Regatta is also part of the Zlatarfest mosaic of events. It gathers boating enthusiasts who, during several hours of shared sailing, have the opportunity to experience up close the beauty of the Uvac Lake and canyon.

Folklore Festival

The Folklore Festival is traditionally held every year as a showcase of folk creativity from Western Serbia, promoting our cultural heritage in the best possible way. Zlatarfest also includes memorial sports tournaments in basketball “Branko Grbić” and futsal “Željko Martinović-Pepo”.

Summer Warm-Up

“Summer Warm-Up” serves as an introduction to Zlatarfest. For years, the “Jovan Tomić” Cultural Center has organized this entertaining and artistic event, contributing to the municipality’s largest summer gathering so that visitors leave Nova Varoš with beautiful memories, while locals enjoy additional cultural content.

Days of Culture

The event “Days of Culture” is certainly one of the longest-standing traditions in this mountain town. Held for more than five decades, it has become a true treasure of Nova Varoš and an important part of its identity. Every February, the “Jovan Tomić” Cultural Center organizes this event to present valuable artistic and cultural content to locals and guests, while also promoting amateur creativity in the Zlatar region. Numerous theater, music, visual art, literary, film, and similar works are part of this month-long traditional program.
